Verdeloth the Ancient
The Commander
Kicker (You may pay an additional
as you cast this spell.)
Saproling creatures and other Treefolk creatures get +1/+1.
When Verdeloth enters, if it was kicked, create X 1/1 green Saproling creature tokens.
Guide
Gameplan
Verdeloth is a mono-green tokens payoff that floods the board with Saprolings and Treefolk, then buffs them into a lethal swarm. Ramp hard, drop Verdeloth with a big kicker to instantly make a wide army, and overrun the table with anthems and a finisher. Recast it from the command zone whenever you need another mass of bodies.
Strengths
- Built-in token generation and anthem in one card
- Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp and land-based recursion
- Resilient go-wide plan that rebuilds quickly after a board wipe
- Scales naturally in big-mana and ramp-heavy lists
Weaknesses
- Extremely vulnerable to board wipes and mass removal
- Lacks card advantage and interaction inherent to mono-green
- No evasion or built-in protection for the swarm
- Slow without ramp; a 6-drop that wants extra mana on top
Key Cards
- Doubling Season — Doubles the Saproling tokens from Verdeloth's kicked ETB and every other token maker.
- Parallel Lives — Cheaper token doubler that turns each kicker payment into twice the bodies.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — The premier finisher that converts your wide Saproling board into immediate lethal damage.
- Cathars' Crusade — Stacks +1/+1 counters every time a token enters, ballooning the swarm into huge threats.
- Slimefoot, the Stowaway — Generates and sacrifices Saprolings for repeatable drain and value alongside Verdeloth.
- Cabal Coffers — Massive mana production to fuel huge kicker values, paired with Urborg-style fixing.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession) and counter engines (Cathars' Crusade, Hardened Scales) to multiply your output, plus a reliable overrun finisher. Lean into mono-green's mana acceleration—Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Itlimoc, and big ramp like Cultivate—to push kicker values higher. Round out the weaknesses with protection (Heroic Intervention), graveyard recursion, and a couple of card-advantage engines like Beast Whisperer or Garruk's Uprising to refill after wipes.
